Washington School is proud to house an elementary level Deaf Education Program for the Omaha Public Schools. Washington's Sign Language Interpreters are an integral part of the Deaf Education team, by facilitating communication between persons who are deaf and hearing. Washington's primary focus is on Signing Exact English, therefore enhancing the language development of children who are deaf and hard of hearing.
Washington Elementary has six full time interpreters on staff. All have surpassed the state mandated score of 3.5 on the Educational Interpreter Performance Assessment (EIPA) or have reached proficiency with other sanctioning bodies. Most have been in the educational setting for over ten years while some have over twenty years of experience. They attend yearly workshops to keep their skills fresh and up to date. Their knowledge and enthusiasm contribute to a positive Washington experience for all students.
