Welcome to 6th grade!

My name is Rachael Pierce and I am very excited to be at Washington!  I have been with OPS since January of 2011.  I have worked as a substitute as well as a 4th and 6th grade teacher.  I am thrilled to be back in a 6th grade classroom! I have a B.S. from UNO and a M.A. from College of Saint Mary.  My husband and I have 4 children and a great dane/mastiff mix named Zeke.  Sixth grade is an exciting year.  I look forward to working with parents and students as we help prepare our kids for middle school. If you have any questions please don't hesitate to email me or call me at school.

We will be using GO Math! for our Math curriculum. Students will have one consumable text book and one Standard Practice Book, often referred to as SPB. The Standard Practice Book has  homework for the entire year in it. For this reason, students are not allowed to bring this book home. If it is misplaced, I do not have any extras to hand out. Students should rip out the page assigned for homework each night.

Unless we have a test that day, students should expect to have math homework every night. Math homework gives each student the opportunity to practice the skill taught that day, outside of school. We will always review the skill/lesson the following day. Any questions the students have about homework will be addressed and skills will be retaught as needed. If homework is not completed, students miss out on the opportunity to ask those questions and receive clarification on the lesson.

Think Central will give students access to their math books online. They can get to Think Central through the waffle in their Office 365 (email) accounts.    ***Students can create their own prodigy accounts using our classroom code: AD2A25

Language Arts

In 6th grade we will be using CollectionsCollections is a Language Arts curriculum that the district adopted for grades 6-12 in the 2017-2018 school year.  Collections focuses heavily on citing evidence as the students analyze the text. Students will be reading complex texts from a variety of genres and content areas.

We will concentrate on one theme per quarter.

1st Quarter: Collection 1 Facing Fear

2nd Quarter: Collection 2 Animal Intelligence

3rd Quarter: Collection 4 Making Your Voice Heard

4th Quarter: Collection 5 Decisions That Matter
